Case 2 – Work Breakdown Structures

Think-Design-Test-Create

  • Description

The company for which you work, RBuild of Ririe, Idaho, has assigned you to be the project manager for the construction of a small office building in Rexburg that would hold around 50 – 100 employees. The customer, a medium sized technology company, has decided to create a location there to utilize the skills of the BYU-Idaho students and others in the area. This technology company, BigTech, has decided that this is to be a long lasting commitment and a major part of their strategy for encouraging graduates to accept employment with them in their main and other branches around the US. The have assigned Joe Feronti as the individual responsible within BigTech for the construction of the building.

Your boss approaches you and says, “BigTech would like us to manage the entire process. They haven’t even selected a site but would like to build their own building so that it meets their needs and will be relying on us to make sugestions as to location, etc.”

“I would like you to manage this project from start to finish,” she continues, “Could you give me a preliminary work breakdown structure for this project so that we can start brainstorming what this is going to take for us to complete this building?”

You realize that you are going to need to do some creating thinking to figure out not only what is needed to build a building but also one that is to be used by a technology company.
